Fresh Flesh – Review

Fresh Flesh (Fresh, #1)Fresh Flesh by Todd Russell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book gave me the willies. At the same time this book wasn’t scary so much as creepy.

Jessica gets washed up on this island in the middle of the ocean…okay not that far off but a good 400 miles from the nearest civilian. She encounters this lone man -Richard or rather Dick -who teaches her her how to live off the land. After about two months she finally hears the truth about this island. And that is where it gets creepy.

Just image a lone women on a tiny island with about 5 serial murderers who haven’t seen a women in years! Yea recipe for disaster. Plus *whispered* I think the island is alive!! *end of whisper* I know right! I think the island takes these convicts, the blackness of their hearts and just turns them insane. Others like Jessica and Richard, who are good souls at best, get tangled up in the mess and go through h*ll but still manage to survive the insanity.

Overall if you want a not-so-scary-but-still-creep-you-out book to read in the dark this is one of those that you should read 🙂

In Between Seasons – Review

In Between Seasons (The Fall, #1)In Between Seasons by Cassandra Giovanni

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I am not too sure how I feel about this book.

As far as a romantic young adult book I think it is great. This is something I would have liked to read to read as a teenage -the romance without intimacy, the chemistry between two people, and the adventure they have.

I found the storyline or rather the mystery of the war to be a bit confusing. The Author really doesn’t go into great details on the war, or the tribes, or even the world around them ; she just seems to focus on the couple. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it’s kinda refreshing not to have to worry about details around you and just focus on the couple and their love story.

The couple is well developed. I don’t normally do “love at first sight” but this works for me because they are both broken. They are a couple whose whole world and family seem to be stacked against them. They fight, they talk, and through it all they develop a friendship that grow to into love.

Overall an okay book to read when you want something to relax with 🙂

Demon Possession – Review

Demon Possession (Shadow Quest, #1)Demon Possession by Kiersten Fay

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I fell in love!! I fell in love with the characters and the book!! Every now and then a book comes along were I get all emotional -sadness, anger, joy in the love they found, anxiety in what will happen next.

Now the title may throw you off but rather think “In possession of a Demon”.

Our main characters are Analia the runaway salve, and Sebastian, the captain who’s ship she stowed away on. This book is definitely science fiction romance. There are different species and figuring out who Analia is is all part of the mystery. She has little memory of who she is and is constantly afraid of her old master finding her and what would happen if Sebastian finds out about her gift.

Sebastian is a demon. Complete with horns and a beast – like temper. You never know where you stand with him, one minute he is a blank wall with no emotion , the next he is trying to stifle the sexual energy flowing around those two. Hence the Title of this book. The demon has possessed her/made her his. He has found his life long mate, and has wooed her till he has won her!

I thought the story dragged out a bit. Then again I did read this book in two days ,I was so glued to the story. Then it just ups and finishes on me. 😦 Talk about your cliffhanger ending.

Anyway, I thought this was a wonderful piece of romance fluff, where if you are in the mood for fantasy, deep space, and romance, then this is the book for you!

Sliding Beneath the Surface – Review

Sliding Beneath the Surface (The St. Augustine Trilogy, #1)Sliding Beneath the Surface by Doug Dillon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I think of Ghost stories, I usually think of hauntings, or possessions. I think scary, terrifying or even sometimes unrealistic. This book put a new spin on the whole Ghost – haunting – you story.

We have a boy ,Jeff, with a very special gift. That gift takes him on a 2 day journey with what started out as horrifying nightmares. He shares these nightmares with his neighbor, African American girl named Carla. She too has a special gift. Her other neighbour, Lobo, has helped her with her special gifts, so the two trot over to see Lobo only to find themselves on a terrifying yet accelerating adventure.

This adventure focuses around Lobo’s house and the cemetery. It focuses on the fact that Jeff’s ancestor is trying to contact him to get Jeff to help him. We don’t know if this Ghost is friendly or malicious but we do know that it is putting Jeff’s life in danger.

I liked the fact that we see the Ghost, not as a devil or spiritual thing, but as a real human who happened to be caught in the afterlife. The Ghost seeks out Jeff to help him find rest and peace in the afterlife.

I would definitely let my teens read this book. It is clean, has little swearing, yet has a few small graphic scenes that might scare the Bajibers out of ya 🙂

Overall a great book that I was happy to read in exchange for an honest review.

Personal Demon – Review

Another great book by Kelley Armstrong in the “Women of the Otherworld” series.
This one follows Hope Adams, a chaos demon. Herself and her on-again/off-again boyfriend/friend Karl (a werewolf) owe Benicio Cortez a favour. In this book he calls on that favour by sending her to infiltrate a gang that might be raising against the Carbel group in Miami. Of course Karl gets wind of it and off he goes to help Hope. Together, along with Paige and Lucas, they solve the crimes. What crimes? Those that involve stealing, thievery, murder, and a great who-dun-it plot twist.

Now what is a chaos demon? According to Kelley it is “a human fathered by a demon. And she’s inherited not only a gift for seeing the past but a hunger for chaos-along with a talent for finding it wherever she can.”   Hope herself describes it as “a cocktail more potent than anything I ever dreamed of. I drank it in, oblivious to my surroundings. I couldn’t remember how I’d gotten here.” pg225  On another page (that I can’t find 🙂 )she describes the chaos as a high. So basically a chaos demon is one who “drinks” the energies of anything remotely chaotic -murder, rage, pain -and can sometimes see what happened even after the fact.
I didn’t like the story line too much, I guess I felt Hope wasn’t “worthy” enough for a story. But you know what? Us girls got to stick together no matter come what may and Kelley can write a beautiful, strong story. I fell in love all over again with this talented author!

The Weight of Silence -Review

The Weight of SilenceThe Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A beautifully written book.

I was browsing Amazon one day and came across this book. So I ordered it. Then I read it and found a new favorite book.

Each chapter is written from a different perspective form one of the main characters -Antonia, Ben, Calli, Martin, Deputy Sheriff Louis. With most books this can be confusing or hard to follow but Heather Gudenkauf pieces it together quite wonderfully.

She immerses the reader into the lives of these two families. She combines the past and present to give us a complete picture of the struggles, heartbreaks, and love.

A book I would highly recommend.

No Humans Involved – Review

Normally after so many books in a series, I start to lose interest. The characters drag on or there is nothing to hold your attention or I just lose interest period. But with Kelley Armstrong’s “Women of the Otherworld” series, I am still so much into it.

No Humans Involved is #7 in the series. This one features Jamie and Jeremy. A mystery and love story all wrapped up in one book. Can you saw yummy!! 😀 haha

Jamie is doing a TV shot with two other “spiritualists”. In the garden in the back of the house she’s staying at she comes across child ghost. Ghosts that can neither talk to her or really communicate with her. That starts her off an adventure/mystery as to why she can’t connect with these ghosts.

She enlists Jeremy to help along with Eve and the stage is set for a great read!  She encounters a group of humans that are trying to harness magic. These are dangerous humans that will stop at nothing to be magical. In the end all the bad guys end up with heir due reward, Jamie frees the children ghosts and Eve and Kristoff see them over to the otherside.

One last note: Jamie is such a tease to Jeremy. She wants to make sure their relationship is/will be going somewhere before they get intimate. However in the meantime she teases Jeremy mercilessly. She lets him see her naked but he can’t touch :O what a bad girl!  A love story to believe in.  **sigh** Jamie is so girly yet so sure of herself. Jeremy is an Alfa wolf and well I don’t think I can say much more. Together they make a great couple and compliment each other quite well.

Understanding World Religions -Review

In Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day, cross-cultural expert and professor Garry Morgan explains the key beliefs, histories, and practices of more than twenty religions, including the familiar–Christianity, Judaism, Mormonism–and some of the lesser known–Baha’i, Sikhism, and New Age religions. Broken into forty short readings, each chapter is engaging and easy to understand. In just minutes a day you’ll soon have a better understanding of the world’s beliefs.

** I was able to read this book for free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for a review**

When I saw that this book was one I could read and review I was kinda excited. I wanted a book like this; one I could research other religions in bite size pieces and come away with some knowledge. I was pleased yet a little disappointed with this book.

This book has very short chapters -roughly 4 pages each topic. So if you wanted to get a rough idea of a certain religion you could do so. In some cases I wanted to learn more and this created the perfect diving board to get  started. I learned a few tidbits that I didn’t know before:

  • Ch. 3  “All other religious systems believe the main responsibility for solving life’s problems rest upon people. Christianity reveals and demonstrates that we cannot set things right by our own efforts”
  • Ch. 9  “Native peoples highly value living in balance with the natural environment.”
  • Ch. 13 “One universal human problem all religions seek to handle is the presence of both good and evil in the world. Dualism is the philosopgical term for this perpetual struggle and religion wrestle with it in so many ways.”
  • Ch. 14 “Islam is an Arabic word meaning “submission” and the religion’s central theme is submission to the will of God.”
  • Ch. 28 “Lamas meaning “superior ones””

These are some of sentences that made this book worth while.

However, there were some issues that I had. Religion is so broad, and it’s hard to narrow it down to a few. Then try to cram those few religions into a few paragraphs. The Author, it seems, had a hard time doing this too. One whole chapter -Shinto- was not very descriptive. I read that chapter and didn’t have a clue what it was. The author talked about how it is Japan’s national religion then went on to talk about China’s religions. It was mostly a chapter about the history not the religion itself.

Also, the Author devoted several chapters to certain religions like Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. As I said because of how vast each religion is instead of giving a complete description on each one, he wrote maybe a paragraph or two on what it was. Then went on and wrote more of the chapter or chapters on the founder, history, and geology of the religion. Which isn’t bad because that is always useful but I wanted to know about the religion and how it works and how they worship.

One last problem I had with this book was the underlying Christian tone. Instead of being a completely biased religion book. I felt it was entirely too Christian. Sometimes it would be a simple comparing of the two religions or sometimes it would be “well we know the Bible says” type tone set in there. That really put me off. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what the Author is trying to remind me but I came reading this book to find out what a particular religion believes not how it compares to Christianity.

All in all ,even with my complaints, this is a useful book to have. Especially if you are doing some research into a particular religion.

Revamp -Review

RevampRevamp by Beck Sherman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was able to read this for free from the group “Read-It-and-Reap” in exchange for an honest review.

I really like this book. I found though that it didn’t really have a set story (well it kinda did) but had a very good story and easy to follow nevertheless.

Emma-Rose wakes up on a plane only to find she was a soul survivor in the vampire Apocalypse. Then the only person she meets tries to kills her. She eventually meets up with a cool little dog and a great guy.

Her takes her to a secluded place and there the group fills her in on the blanks and teaches her to fight.

I love vampires and these are the dark ones -sunlight kills, steaks through the heart kills, and they like blood!

I found the Author veers from the main story to tell about some background of the various characters. Normally I don’t like that as I want to get on with the story 🙂 However the author kept me glued to the story.

Great book!

Broken -Review

This is the sixth book in the Kelley Armstrong series: Women of the Otherworld. We are back with Clay and Elena, and Elena is pregnant!!

So we start off with a pregnant and very worried Elena, plus her mate Clay. There has never been a recording of a female werewolf getting pregnant. She is so nervous and having nightmares. So to get her mind off the pregnancy, she takes a quick easy job. Clay and Jeremy go with her. A quick break and enter, then home to rest and relaxation (as much as her mind will let her)

Only something goes wrong (as they are wont to do in books 😉 ) The item they stole had a spell cast on it , and they triggered the spell which triggered a porthole from the past. They call up they rest of the pack plus Jamie the necromancer. I do so hope Jeremy and Jamie get together. 🙂 Anywho we now have Jack-the-Ripper, zombies(yes, there are zombies in this book!). a pregnant werewolf and all sorts of wonderful, witty dialog that only Kelley Armstrong can deliver.

All in all they figure out the whos and whys (I don’t want to give away any spoilers) and back to normalcy everyone goes. At the very, very end we are treated to a great surprise when Elena gets to deliver!!

I have to say I love, love, love Clay and Elena. Clay reminds me so much of my hubby. haha okay Clay is too feral and my hubby to tame to be compared but the Relationship is there. I see and feel the love and close relationship they have!  Even though they bicker and fight, kiss and make-up, love surrounds them! That is a beautiful thing -to see a couple with loads of problems come together.

Another great book from author Kelley Armstrong!!
